Something has shifted in the colour world, and honestly, we're here for it. More and more of our clients are asking the same question: how do I get beautiful colour that doesn't need constant upkeep?
Gone are the days when colour meant strict four-weekly appointments and that telltale regrowth line creeping in by week three. The techniques we have now make it possible to have stunning, dimensional colour that actually looks better as it grows - not worse. Let's walk through the options.
Traditional Foils, Balayage, and Colour Melting - What's the Difference?
These terms get used interchangeably sometimes, but they're actually quite different - and understanding them helps you choose what's right for your hair and your lifestyle.
Traditional Foils
Foils are the classic approach. Your colourist separates precise sections, applies colour or lightener, and wraps each in foil. It gives you a consistent, even result with clear dimension - brilliant for all-over lightening or grey blending.
The trade-off is that foiled highlights can create a more defined regrowth line, which usually means touch-ups every six to eight weeks.
Balayage
Balayage - French for "to sweep" - is a freehand painting technique. Your colourist sweeps lightener onto the surface of the hair, concentrating colour towards the mid-lengths and ends while keeping the root area softer.
Because the colour isn't applied right up to the root, there's no harsh regrowth line. The transition stays soft and natural for much longer, which means you can comfortably stretch to twelve weeks or more between appointments.
Colour Melting
Colour melting is the technique capturing attention right now. While balayage adds lightness through freehand painting, colour melting blends multiple tones together so seamlessly that one shade dissolves into the next - no visible lines, just a beautiful, fluid gradient.
The two are often used together - balayage to create dimension, then colour melting to soften every transition point. The result grows out gracefully. It's low-maintenance by design.
What's Trending This Autumn
If you're considering a colour change this season, here are some of the palettes we're loving right now:
- Warm brunettes - Rich chocolate, mocha mousse, and deep espresso tones. These shades look stunning with a soft colour melt from root to tip, and they're beautifully low-maintenance on darker bases.
- Golden caramel - Caramel ribbons through a warm brown base create gorgeous dimension without the upkeep of a full head of blonde. Perfect for adding warmth and movement.
- Soft apricot blonde - A gentler take on the strawberry blonde, with peachy-golden tones that feel effortless and warm. Beautiful as the cooler weather settles in.
- Cinnamon copper - For those drawn to something richer, warm copper and cinnamon tones bring a beautiful glow to autumn. These shades work particularly well with colour melting, where the warmth builds gradually from root to end.
The common thread? Everything feels lived-in, warm, and intentional. The era of stark, high-maintenance contrast is making way for colour that moves and breathes with your hair.
Why Low-Tox Colour Matters
At Curjo, we use both SOPHIC and Oway colour. They're different by design: SOPHIC is formulated with powerful Australian native botanicals, while Oway carries the highest concentration of organic, biodynamic, and fair trade ingredients of any professional colour line. The difference matters more than you might think.
Conventional salon colour relies on ammonia to force open the hair cuticle so pigment can penetrate. It works, but it's aggressive - on your hair, on your scalp, and on the air you're breathing. Oway replaces ammonia with nourishing botanicals like biodynamic hibiscus, organic perilla, and ethical date and illipe butters. SOPHIC uses MEA, a coconut-derived alternative. The cuticle is opened more gently, which means less damage, less dryness, and a smoother finish.
What you'll notice first is the absence of sharp chemical fumes. But beyond that, the hair itself feels different. Softer. Shinier. Less of that dry, straw-like feeling that can follow conventional colouring. And because the cuticle seals back more smoothly, pigment stays put for longer and fades more gracefully.
How to Go Longer Between Appointments
This is the question we hear most often. Here are the things that genuinely make a difference.
Choose the Right Technique
A well-placed balayage or colour melt with a soft root will always grow out more gracefully than an all-over colour or tight highlights right up to the hairline. If low-maintenance is your goal, talk to us about this at your next appointment.
Look After Your Colour at Home
- Use colour-safe, low-tox products - sulfates strip colour faster than almost anything else. Our Oway and SOPHIC ranges are formulated to protect your colour while keeping your hair and scalp healthy.
- Space out your washes - every two to three days is ideal. Your colour and your scalp will thank you.
- Rinse cool - a cooler rinse after conditioning helps seal the cuticle and lock pigment in.
- Book a glossing ritual between full services to refresh your tone and add shine without a full colour appointment.
Finding Your Colour
Every head of hair is different, and the best colour result comes from a proper conversation - your natural base, your lifestyle, how much maintenance you're comfortable with. These are the things we talk through before we ever pick up a brush.
Our colour services run from a simple root regrowth through to full head foils and balayage, and a fresh haircut and blowdry pairs beautifully with any colour service. Every appointment begins with a thorough consultation.
